1 Figure 1. Networked Infomechanical Systems (NIMS) introduces a hierarchy of fixed and mobile sensing nodes and infrastructure enabling access to complex, three dimensional environments. NIMS mobility provides novel methods for establishing self-awareness of sensing uncertainty. Further, examples of new NIMS distributed services include node transport, physical sample acquisition, energy harvesting and delivery, wireless network relay functions, and many others.
